A 24-hour blood pressure monitor measures your blood pressure automatically at regular intervals throughout the day and night. Unlike a single clinic reading, this test provides a more accurate and comprehensive picture of how your blood pressure behaves in your everyday life, helping to identify patterns and variations over a full 24-hour period.
Why is it performed?
This test helps diagnose high blood pressure (hypertension) and assess how well it is managed with medication or lifestyle measures.
It can also show whether your blood pressure fluctuates at different times of the day — for example, being higher in the morning or at night.
A 24-hour monitor is particularly helpful for people who appear to have raised blood pressure only in a medical setting — a phenomenon known as “white-coat hypertension.” By measuring your blood pressure during your normal routine, the test gives your cardiologist a clear and reliable overview of your heart health.
What does the test involve?
A blood pressure cuff is fitted around your upper arm and connected to a small, lightweight recording device worn on your belt or shoulder strap.
The cuff automatically inflates every 30–60 minutes during the day and less frequently at night while you sleep.
You can continue with your usual daily activities, though it’s best to keep your arm still each time the cuff inflates to ensure accurate readings.
- Preparation & Positioning
A blood pressure cuff will be fitted to your upper arm and connected to a small recording unit that you’ll wear discreetly on your belt or shoulder strap.
- During the Scan:
The device automatically takes readings throughout the day and night. You can go about your normal routine but should try to keep your arm still whenever the cuff inflates.
- Safety & Comfort:
The monitor is lightweight, comfortable to wear, and completely safe. Most people find it easy to tolerate and can sleep, work, and move around as usual.
After the test
You’ll return the monitor the following day so your cardiologist can download and analyse the data.
The results provide a detailed profile of your blood pressure throughout the 24-hour period, helping to guide decisions about lifestyle changes or medication adjustments if needed.
